You’ve made it through Dental Health Week — but your child’s smile journey is just beginning!

This week, we’ve explored the key “S-milestones” every child needs for a healthy mouth and a confident smile:

🦷 See the dentist by age 1
🪥 Start brushing early
🍏 Make smart snack choices
❌ Avoid sugary snacks & drinks
💧Stick to water & plain milk
👨‍👩‍👧 Supervise brushing until at least age 8

These small, simple habits — with your support — can protect your child from pain, decay and dental anxiety in the future.

💬 Not sure if your child is on track? That’s what we’re here for. Whether it’s their first visit or their fifth, we’ll help make every step stress-free and smile-friendly.

S-milestone: Supervise brushing until at least age 8!

🪥 Think your child’s brushing on their own is enough? Think again.

🪥 Most kids don’t have the coordination to brush properly until they’re around 8 years old — even if they’re super independent in other ways!

🦷 Here’s what healthy brushing looks like:
✅ Twice a day, for 2 minutes
✅ Pea-sized amount of fluoride toothpaste (from 18 months+)
✅ Brushing all sides — not just the front
✅ Spit, don’t rinse — so fluoride can keep working

💡Tip: Turn it into a team activity. Brush together. Sing songs. Set a 2-minute timer & make it fun!

✨ These early years are when habits are built — and smiles are protected for life.

S-milestone: Snack smart — protect little teeth!

✨ Not all snacks are created equal when it comes to your child’s smile.

✨ Sticky, sugary, and processed snacks may seem harmless, but they cling to teeth and feed decay-causing bacteria long after snack time is over.

🚫 Watch out for sticky snacks and refined carbs like muesli bars, roll-ups, dried fruit, crackers, biscuits, and sweetened yoghurts.

✅ Smile-friendly swaps:
🥕 Veggie sticks with hummus
🧀 Cheese cubes or plain yoghurt
🍓 Fresh fruit instead of juice or dried fruit

💡Tip: Save sweet treats for mealtimes when saliva is flowing and can help protect teeth.

S-milestone: Skip the sugary drinks!

✨ Think fruit juice is a healthy choice? Even “100% natural” juice can pack as much sugar as soft drink — and little teeth pay the price.

❌ Sugary drinks like juice, cordial, flavoured milk and soft drink feed harmful bacteria in the mouth, leading to tooth decay and erosion — even in baby teeth!

❌ Even sugar-free options aren’t always safe: many still contain acids that wear away enamel.

✅ Best drink choices?
💧 Tap water (with fluoride!)
🥛 Plain milk

💡 Tip: Offer fresh fruit instead of juice — it’s more filling, has fibre, and is much kinder on teeth.

S-milestone: “Visit the Dentist by age ONE!”

✨ Did you know that your little one’s first dental visit should happen by age ONE or when their first tooth appears – whichever comes first!

✨ Early visits aren’t just for treatment — they’re about setting up good habits for life!

At this gentle first visit, we’ll:

👶🏻 Check your baby’s teeth and gums
🍼 Chat about feeding, teething, thumb-sucking & dummies
🪥 Guide you on brushing and the right toothpaste.

✨ It’s also a chance to help your child feel calm and comfortable with the dentist from the very beginning — before there’s ever pain or fear.

💡Tip: Turn it into a game! Count their teeth at home or read a “first dentist visit” storybook together. This helps ease them into the dental chair without any fear.
