Types of Whitening

There are five main ways we can whiten your teeth.

Take-home Whitening kit with a custom made tray

Whiten your teeth at your own leisure. The time taken for this is typically up to 2 weeks, wearing the trays from 30mins (day bleach) to 8h (night bleach) a day.

We aim to whiten all your teeth in an hour. You will still get a custom tray to take home just in case you need to whiten them more. This is the best method if you need to whiten your teeth in a hurry.

Whitening powder is placed internally inside your tooth, generally after root canal treatment. We use this to correct intrinsic stains (eg. a dark tooth).

Not technically a whitening procedure, but is typically used to ensure uniform colour throughout a tooth using special paste and an abrasive brush.

Not technically a whitening procedure, but is typically used to ensure uniform colour throughout a tooth using small resin particles.

Top Reasons People Choose Professional Teeth Whitening

One of the main reasons patients choose teeth whitening is to improve the appearance of yellow or stained teeth. Stains can develop over time due to coffee, tea, red wine, smoking, or simply the natural aging process.

It’s important to note that not all teeth are suitable for whitening. In some cases, darker or discoloured teeth may require alternative cosmetic treatments such as veneers or dental crowns. We also recommend completing any necessary dental work — such as fillings — before starting whitening, so your mouth is healthy and your results are even.

Side Effects of Teeth Whitening

Before starting any whitening treatment, we conduct a thorough dental examination to ensure you are a suitable candidate. Teeth whitening may not be suitable for:

  • Very young patients
  • Those with poor oral hygiene
  • Teeth with large root exposures

The most common side effect is temporary tooth sensitivity, which usually resolves within a few days. In rare cases, sensitivity may last longer.

Common Dental Problems

Tooth Decay
Tooth decay or (cavity), is the unsightly brown or black spot on your tooth. Addressing it promptly is essential as it can often lead to further progression of the decay into the tooth.
Toothache
A toothache is pain in or around a tooth that can range from mild discomfort to severe, throbbing pain. It often signals an underlying dental problem that needs urgent professional attention.
Sensitive Teeth
Refers to a condition when a person experiences sharp, sudden pain or discomfort in their teeth when exposed to certain triggers.
Impacted Wisdom teeth
Impacted Wisdom teeth are your last (third) molars which stuck and can't come out due to their poor angulation. Signs include pain, swelling, infection, and headaches.
Teeth Grinding
Teeth grinding (bruxism), is a common condition where patients unconsciously clench, grind, or gnash their teeth together.
Tooth Abscess
A tooth abscess is a localised collection of pus caused by a bacterial infection inside the tooth or surrounding gum tissue. It often leads to intense pain, swelling, and requires prompt dental care to prevent further complications.
Crowded Teeth
Crowded teeth occur when there isn’t enough space in the jaw for teeth to sit in proper alignment.
Crooked Teeth
Crooked teeth usually develop due to a narrow or restricted jaw that doesn’t provide enough space for teeth to fit correctly.
Yellow Teeth
Many people feel self-conscious about yellow teeth or tooth discolouration as it can affect confidence, self-esteem, and appearance.
Bad Breath
Bad breath, is a common yet often embarrassing condition that can affect your confidence and social interactions. It may indicate an underlying dental or medical problem that needs attention.
Dry Mouth
Dry mouth, also known as xerostomia, occurs when your salivary glands do not produce enough saliva to keep your mouth moist.

Enamel Erosion
Enamel erosion occurs when acids wear away the strong outer layer of your teeth leading to tooth sensitivity, cosmetic changes, and even functional damage.
Jaw Pain
Jaw pain is a common but often overlooked dental and medical issue which requires early treatment to prevent deterioration of symptoms.
Gum Infection
Gum infections are painful and can cause redness, swelling, bleeding, and pus around the gums.
Receding Gums

Cracked tooth
A cracked tooth refers to a condition when a tooth has chipped or fractured which generally results in a "sharp tooth" or at worst, a "tooth ache". Cracks can vary in size, depth, and location, impacting the tooth's structure and overall integrity.
Root Canal Infection
A root canal infection happens when bacteria enter the inner part of a tooth, called the pulp - and can be extremely painful.
Dental Anxiety
Are you scared of the dentist? Do you think you need a lot of work done but can't bear to be in the dental chair?

How much does teeth whitening cost?

Teeth whitening procedures at Dental at Keys cost under $500 for a take-home kit which includes 2 custom fit trays and the whitening material. In-chair whitening will cost more as it involves more time at the dentist and also a take-home kit.

Unfortunately, it is impossible to guarantee whitening results. Everyone’s teeth are different and as such, everyone’s teeth whiten differently and there is nothing we can do to control that. The majority of our patients experience at the minimum, 1-2 shades lighter of difference. There may be a case where some patients may not see any improvement and some patients experience amazing results in just a few days.

There are many variables for this. Generally, most patients will only whiten their teeth once a year at most. Certain foods and drink can stain your teeth quickly and you may find that you will have to bleach your teeth on a more regular basis. If you have an existing tray that fits you and you have had a check-up recently, we can sell you a bleach refill kit when you run out. Doing a small top up for a few nights every couple of months is more likely to maintain the shade.
